Niger Assembly suspends Shiroro Local Government Council VC, Nine Others

Niger State House of Assembly has moved to suspend Shiroro Local Government Vice Chairman and other nine councillors for disregarding it’s invitation to appear before the committee in finding a lasting solution concerning the crisis going on in shiroro local government.

The chairman committee on local government and chieftaincy affairs Hon. Shuaibu Mohammed liman Iya presented and read out it’s report on the findings and observations on the Shiroro crisis before the floor of the house on Tuesday, 16th march.

The committee observed that among other factors, the entire crisis is centered on ‘financial matters’ especially with regards to the 2nd tranch of fifty millon naira tenement rate from North-South company Nig. Ltd.

The committee also observed that from available records, there was no minutes of proceedings which is expected to cover the resolutions reached by the councillors. Some councillors attested before the committee that, there was no sitting on the issue regarding the suspension of the council chairman. Rather members were called to converge at the leader’s house to append their signatures for the suspension of the chairman.

Contrary to the insinuation that monies are spent without legislative approval, the committee found out that these monies was approved by the council leader.

The committee confirmed from the director Admin who also doubled as the clerk yo the council legislature that the council has been operating without any guiding rules.

After much deliberations, the house resolved that the vice Chairman, sergeant Ishaku Bawa and Hon. Adamu Galadima, councillor representing shel/laps ward in Shiroro local government should vacate their offices and directed the Department Security Service, DSS to commence full investigation on these two officials based on the allegations labeled against them.

On the nine councillors and vice chairman who refused to appear before the committee, according to sections 128 and 129 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) the house suspended the vice chairman and nine councillors of (gijiwa/kato, gurmana, bassa/kukoli, kashaku/kurebe, alawa, manta, gusoro/zumba, shel/laps, kwaki/chukuba) wards for refusing to honor all the invitations before the committee till further notice.

The house also moved that all monies collected by the councillors as sitting allowances and also tge 500,000 collected by each councillor be refunded to the council treasury.

The speaker, Hon. Members moved that Hon. Chukuba remain the council chairman of Shiroro local government and that all entitlement should equally be paid to him.
