Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, has reacted to deposition of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, saying that the monarchical system of leadership in the country has outlived its usefulness and relevance.
On Monday, the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State had dethroned the emir over alleged violation of culture and traditions of the state.
In a swift reaction, Mr Gumi, in a statement posted to his social media handles, said: “The monarchy is a vestige of the medieval Era, very, unfortunately, turned out to be a bad consequence of both religious misinterpretation and misrepresentation.”
The cleric noted that the system of leadership is un-Islamic, stressing that “Islam abhors the bowing down of people to mortals except to Allah alone”.
He said: “For Islam, leadership is never by birthright but consensus (shurah) of the population and it’s exactly what negates Shiism as a heretic sect that developed from this alleged hereditary succession of power.
“The Sokoto Jihad was primarily aimed at religious and social reforms that should tally with the pristine Islamic agitation for justice, equality and mercy.”
“One cannot claim to be a custodian of Islam and it’s culture and perpetuate the subservience of man towards a fellow human. And this negative trend is unfortunately what the present-day monarchy only represents.
“You can be as mean as anything, yet Allah The al-Mighty will give you respite but don’t hide behind the cloak of religion to spread mischief. You exposure will be quick.
“That is the reason Allah has now systematically reduced the monarchy to trash. The best way out is to abolish it completely.
“Let the ‘royal’ blood prove itself like any other citizen without any privileges (moreover not even accorded by Allah) and be law-abiding citizens.
“The system has outlived its usefulness and relevance. It has reached a point of diminishing returns. It has no place in modern times except in annals of history books.
“It has become contradictory and retrogressive in a dynamic, changing world of speed and space,” the statement noted.
